At the beginning of this month, @evleaks posted a photo of the M8 Ace from HTC. While his tweet did not say anything about the device, rumours started floating around that HTC is planning on releasing a plastic version of its recent flagship — the One (M8) — at a much lower price point to threaten the Samsung Galaxy S5.
Now, the folks over at Engadget have received a confirmed tip from one of their reliable sources that the M8 Ace is indeed real and will be coming with a plastic unibody construction.
The handset will also sport identical internals as its higher-end sibling including a 5-inch 1080p display and a Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz. What remains to be seen is whether HTC will be going in with the same Duo cameras as seen on the M8 or will switch to a 13MP camera as seen on the Desire 816 to keep the costs down.
HTC has always released a plastic version of its flagship phone meant for the asian market under its Butterfly brand with minor to no hardware changes. It is not yet known if the M8 Ace is an upcoming Butterfly branded handset with the same design and internals as the One (M8) or truly a plastic built version of the latter.
The M8 Ace is rumoured to go on sale for an unsubsidised price of around $480, which if true, is very attractive indeed.
